Discussions are expected to begin at Cranbrook City Hall regarding potential time zone changes in the Kootenays.
According to the city, council will take part in discussions with the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK), local municipalities, and First Nations that currently observe Mountain Time.
This follows the province’s March 2 announcement that the rest of B.C. plans to adopt permanent daylight saving time as part of a new Pacific time zone.
The East Kootenay region, including Cranbrook, was not included in that announcement.
However, the province noted in its media release that local governments in the region can decide whether they want to observe the new Pacific time along with the rest of B.C.
In a release, council indicated support for returning to Mountain Standard Time in November 2026 and remaining aligned with the province moving forward.
The Regional District of East Kootenay says that prior to discussions with council, it is gathering feedback from local governments and First Nations before considering a regional approach.
“Certainly, the feedback the city has received suggests that residents overwhelmingly support being on the same time zone as the rest of the province year-round,” said Mayor Wayne Price.
“Council has agreed to work closely with our RDEK and First Nations partners in gathering a regional consensus.”
Cranbrook has not yet adopted any time zone changes.
