At Monday night’s (Mar. 9) meeting, Cranbrook City Council approved an additional $5.43 million in funding for the UV disinfection facility and heard details on several projects planned for 2026.
According to the city, the funds will come from several sources, including the Capital Water Fund, Community Works Funding, the Community Works Gas Tax Reserve, the Sanitary Sewer Capital Reserve and part of the 2026 Capital Works Roads Program.
Among the largest projects is the new UV disinfection facility, which aims to modernize the city’s water treatment by adding ultraviolet disinfection alongside a new sodium hypochlorite system.
City officials say the dual-barrier system will improve water quality, enhance safety and ensure Cranbrook continues to meet provincial drinking water standards.
The facility is also intended to support projected growth over the next 75 years, and the city says it may help avoid building a much more expensive filtration plant in the future.
Council also approved upgrades to the Balment Park sanitary trunk main, extending Victoria Avenue’s replacement work to the base of the Balment stairs.
The work is intended to support major developments in the area, including Creekside Townhomes, the F.W. Green Home expansion and the proposed Rotary Seniors housing project.
Funding will come from the 2026 Capital Works sanitary sewer budget and sanitary sewer development cost charges.
Other approved projects include:
2026 paving program: Roads will be resurfaced based on age and condition, with selections finalized after staff assess winter damage and the spring thaw.
PRV #4 upgrades: Internal piping and valves at the pressure reducing station at 27th Avenue South and 7th Street South will be replaced. Valve sizes will also be increased to improve fire flow. Residents may experience minor shutdowns during the work.
Sanitary sewer lagoons screener upgrades: The final phase of lagoon improvements, funded through a grant from the Union of BC Municipalities, includes installing baffle curtains and a new dual-channel screener, along with onsite backup power and improved waste collection.
