Cranbrook City Council gave three readings Monday (Mar. 9) night to a proposed amendment to the city’s Sign Bylaw, aimed at reducing the number of election signs along Victoria Avenue ahead of the 2026 municipal election.
If adopted, the changes would limit candidates to 10 signs each along Victoria Avenue.
The current bylaw, adopted in July 2022, allows a maximum of 20 signs per candidate along the Highway 3/95 corridor during federal, provincial, municipal, and school district elections.
City staff say they noticed a significant increase in signs along Victoria Avenue after the 2024 provincial and 2025 federal elections.
Staff recommended the lower limit to make the rules clear, simple, and easy to follow, while still allowing candidates visibility along the main corridors.
The proposed changes are intended to reduce visual clutter and minimize pedestrian safety concerns along the busy city street.
They would not affect residents’ ability to place campaign signs on private property.
If approved, the updated Sign Bylaw will be included in all future nomination packages, so candidates are aware of the new rules.
