RCMP say an avalanche on Saturday (Feb. 28) in Kootenay Pass swept away two snowmobilers, killing one of them.
On Feb. 28, 2026, at approximately 12:10 p.m., Creston RCMP received notification of an SOS activation from a Garmin device in the Kootenay Pass area.
Shortly after, RCMP were advised that an avalanche had occurred involving two snowmobilers, one of whom was unresponsive.
RCMP say the avalanche, rated at size 2.5, occurred in the transmission line area behind Camel’s Hump.
Other snowmobilers in the vicinity responded immediately and assisted the two men while emergency personnel from Creston RCMP, Search and Rescue and BC Emergency Health Services attended the scene.
Both individuals were extracted by fellow riders; however, despite rescue efforts, a 23-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Creston RCMP extended its condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.
Officers say no further information will be released at this time.
According to Avalanche Canada, avalanche risk across B.C.’s Interior remains “considerable.”
