The City of Cranbrook will abandon its X (formerly Twitter) accounts effective March 1, 2026.
The move applies to both the City’s main account and the Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services page.
In a report to council on Monday (Feb. 23), staff said the platform has changed significantly since 2020 and, amid reports of harmful content and insufficient safeguards, it is no longer considered an appropriate channel for sharing City information.
The decision follows an ongoing review of the City’s social media use.
In November 2024, the City disabled public comments on Facebook and X aimed at reducing disrespectful remarks and limiting the spread of misinformation.
Results of the Cranbrook Citizen Survey — Budget 2026 show 48 per cent of respondents prefer receiving City information through social media. Email newsletters were preferred by 41 per cent, while 39 per cent favoured updates to the City website.
Staff reported low engagement on X over the past year, with posts averaging 45 to 50 views.
Resources will be redirected to platforms with higher engagement, including Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
No additional changes to the City’s social media presence are planned at this time.
