On Tuesday, Feb. 17, the Elk Valley RCMP were dispatched following an emergency device activation in the remote Morrissey area near Fernie, B.C.
Initial information indicated that a snowmobiler in the area had been caught in an avalanche.
Front-line officers, along with Search and Rescue, responded.
However, RCMP say that due to the time of day and the area being identified as a high-hazard avalanche zone, immediate efforts to locate the man could not be undertaken safely.
The following day (Feb. 18), Search and Rescue recovered the body of the man, who was confirmed dead at the scene as a result of the avalanche.
RCMP say the man was wearing proper clothing and appropriate gear, along with safety equipment.
In a release, Elk Valley RCMP extended their condolences to the man’s loved ones.
