At Monday night’s (Jan. 26) city council meeting, Cranbrook RCMP presented its 2025 annual report to council.
The report showed police responded to 8,651 reports in 2025, including 2,003 during the fourth quarter.
Staff Sgt. Barry Graham told council that police also handled 1,879 calls for service in the final quarter of the year.
Compared with the third quarter of 2025, the detachment recorded increases in minor fraud, motor vehicle accidents and thefts from vehicles during the final months of the year.
RCMP said they submitted 54 reports to Crown counsel in the fourth quarter, resulting in 31 approved charges.
Officers conducted 20 curfew checks, 35 joint patrols with city bylaw officers and 288 proactive patrols during that period.
In 2025, Cranbrook RCMP carried out 169 joint patrols with bylaw enforcement, a 60 per cent increase from 2024, along with 618 proactive patrols and 115 curfew checks.
The detachment also said that members participated in 12 official community events and launched four new crime-reduction projects in 2025.
These included Project 529, an online bicycle registration system; Make Your Mark, which encourages residents to engrave valuables; a Business Block Watch pilot aimed at reducing commercial property crime; and Fetch Your Property, a partnership with the BC SPCA East Kootenay intended to help reunite recovered property with owners while promoting pet adoptions.
Police reported year-over-year increases in several crime categories, including assaults, which rose to 301 incidents, commercial break-and-enters at 105, vehicle thefts at 64, bicycle thefts at 65, and motor vehicle accidents, which reached 457 in 2025.
Graham said the detachment continues to adjust its operations in response to changing crime patterns.
“We continue to strive to adapt to evolving community needs by using a data-driven approach to ensure we are operating as efficiently and responsibly as we can while responding to crime trends,” he said.
He added the RCMP plans to maintain its focus on proactive policing, property crime reduction, transparency and collaboration with community partners in 2026.
