Some communities are wrapping up the holiday season with the launch of several Christmas tree pickup programs across the East Kootenay and Elk Valley.
The District of Sparwood kicked off its collection initiative on Tuesday, January 6, with public works crews conducting intermittent pickups until Friday, January 9.
Drop-off locations will also be available at the Sparwood Heights and Lower Sparwood compost areas for those who want to keep their trees up longer. Any trees thrown out after the January 12 deadline must be delivered directly to the transfer station.
Kimberley will also be starting curbside collection every Monday this month, weather permitting. Drop-offs are now available at the Kimberley Transfer Station at 800 Jim Ogilvie Way.
Lastly, the City of Cranbrook has not launched an official pickup campaign, but the 4th Cranbrook Scouts are hosting their annual tree pick-up event this weekend.
On Saturday, January 10, the Scouts are offering to collect trees for free or by donation. All proceeds are earmarked for youth programming in the community.
Residents who want to participate are asked to register by email to cbkscouts@gmail.com or contact Scouter Brett Watson at 250-420-1979. Trees must be placed outside their homes no later than 9 a.m. the same day.
