A fire at the City of Kimberley’s Public Works Yard on Dec. 24 led to the destruction of several pieces of heavy equipment and caused notable damage to a storage building, though no injuries were reported.
The Kimberley Fire Department was alerted to the blaze at 4:07 p.m. on Dec. 24 while crews were preparing for the annual Santa Claus Tour.
The event was cancelled as a result, but emergency responders say the quick response helped limit the damage.
According to the City of Kimberley, at least four pieces of City-owned equipment were destroyed, including two tandem/dump trucks, a boom truck, and a mini excavator.
Additional equipment is being assessed for smoke damage and potential repairs.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation but is not considered suspicious.
Public Works operations are continuing, with crews maintaining regular snow clearing and sanding services.
The City says they’re working with insurance adjusters and local equipment providers to assess losses and secure replacement equipment if needed.
The fire damage has disrupted solid waste services.
Organics collection for the week of Dec. 29 has been cancelled for all routes, and Route C garbage collection, previously rescheduled to Jan. 2, will now take place on Jan. 5.
Recycling collection, handled by GFL, is not affected.
The Kimberley Transfer Station remains open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., except on New Year’s Day.
City officials say updates will be posted on the city’s website as more information becomes available.
