The Rocky Mountain District’s Wildfire Risk Reduction team is set to start a fuel reduction project in the Toby Benches area west of Invermere, with work running until spring 2026.
The treatment area is just under 48 hectares.
Crews will remove built-up surface fuels and widen space between trees by taking out smaller stems, ladder fuels, and hazardous trees.
Heavy equipment, including a skidder, forwarder, chipper, and chip trucks, is set to be on site.
Work is set to run daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
The public is asked to respect all signage and active work zones.
All material collected will be used at the Skookumchuk Pulp Mill.
Officials say the goal is to reduce wildfire intensity and slow its spread so firefighters have a better chance of suppressing them.
While they say the project cannot prevent all wildfires, it is intended to boost community resilience and improve public safety.
