Drivers heading toward Kelowna or Vancouver this weekend are being advised to expect difficult driving conditions on Highway 3, as Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the stretch between Kootenay Pass and Paulson Summit.
The alert, issued early Friday morning (Nov. 14) calls for 15 to 25 centimetres of snow beginning Friday and continuing into Saturday morning.
Forecasters say lots of snow will fall over the pass through the day, bringing as much as 15 centimetres.
Another 10 to 15 centimetres is expected overnight before the snow tapers off Saturday morning as temperatures rise and snow changes to rain showers.
Environment Canada warns visibility may drop suddenly at times and notes that weather in the mountains can change quickly, creating hazardous driving conditions.
Drivers are urged to allow extra time, slow down, use headlights in low visibility, and maintain a safe following distance.
Officials also remind drivers to ensure they are equipped for winter driving with proper tires or chains.
Road conditions are available through DriveBC, and travellers are encouraged to monitor Environment Canada’s latest forecasts and alerts.
