Cranbrook’s Royal Canadian Legion branch is remembering its veterans with a number of events this week.
On November 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Legion will be hosting a barbecue at Bridge Interiors, with all proceeds going towards the preservation of the Wall of Honour and Cenotaph in Rotary Park.
“We’re looking at getting proper lighting as is due to war memorials, and just some protection to stop people from going in and climbing on it,” said Legion Secretary Manager Debi Hart.
“It’s starting to show its age. Pieces are starting to break off because kids go in and climb on it. We need to stop that because if it falls apart, it can never be replaced.”
The Cenotaph is approximately 104 years old and bears the names of 166 residents who never returned home after serving in the First World War.
The Legion is also set to host its annual Remembrance Day parade, followed by a short ceremony and a wreath laying on Tuesday, November 11.
“We do our best to connect with all veterans to lay wreaths, but we don’t always have a list of the veterans in the community, so if you wish to lay a wreath on behalf of a veteran, please contact the Legion office, because we do not wish to miss anybody that wishes to lay a wreath,” added Tammy Richards, president of the local Legion.
The Remembrance Day parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. on 10th Avenue, near City Hall, and will proceed into the park at 10:45 a.m.
Poppies and poppy merchandise will be sold at all Legion events this week to support community initiatives serving seniors, the hospital, Angel Air and more.
