Residents and business leaders are invited to celebrate three Cranbrook citizens who have made a lasting impact on their community this month.
The Cranbrook Chamber of Commerce has now announced the nominees for its 2025 Citizen of the Year Award:
- Brian Clifford, retired general manager of the Skookumchuck Pulp Mill, has spent decades of service in volunteer work, including over 65 volunteer hours each month at the Cranbrook/Kimberley Hospice Society
- Sven Sloeserwij, president of JCI Kootenay, has championed initiatives like “30 under 30” and volunteered with events including the Ed Fest, the Children’s Festival and Rotary projects.
- Robert “Bob” Whetham (posthumously), former RDEK planning director and two-term city councillor.
“These nominees represent the very best of what it means to be part of this community,” said Stacey Brensrud, executive director.
“From small acts that have changed the life of a fellow citizen to large scale leadership positions, this is a great reminder that strong communities are built from within and the opportunities to make a difference are endless.”
The award was first established in 1973 to recognize individuals who “go above and beyond” through volunteer work, community leadership or creating opportunities for others.
This year’s event is set to be presented at the 2025 Evening of Excellence on Friday, October 24, at the Key City Theatre.
