After 18 months of partnership, the City of Cranbrook has announced that the Mayor’s Task Force on community safety and support for unhoused residents has completed its work.
Launched in October 2023, the Task Force brought together local organizations, health professionals, provincial ministries, businesses, and enforcement agencies.
Its goal was to improve how the community works together to address safety challenges and support unhoused residents in Cranbrook.
In October 2024, the group shared five key recommendations with City Council and continued its work for another year to put those ideas into action.
According to the City, partners have since reported better communication and stronger collaboration.
Mayor Wayne Price said that moving to a more collaborative approach has already made a difference.
Price also noted that this approach has helped attract funding and reduce pressure on emergency services.
Some previously visible concerns—such as areas behind McDonald’s and near schools or creeks—have reportedly been addressed, leading to fewer conflicts and improved public safety.
According to Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services, emergency call volumes have remained steady over the past three quarters.
The RCMP and Bylaw Officers have also increased their presence, completing nearly 100 joint patrols in 2025.
With its key goals now met, the Task Force has officially dissolved.
Its members will continue their work through their respective agencies.
The City thanks all Task Force members and community partners for their dedication.
