The City of Cranbrook is moving forward with a grant application for up to $7 million through the Strategic Priorities Fund to support construction of the Phillips Reservoir Bypass Pipeline.
City council approved the application during its regular meeting on Monday, Sept. 8.
According to the city, the bypass pipeline is considered a high priority project intended to improve the reliability and strength of Cranbrook’s water system.
It would allow water to be delivered directly from the Gold Creek Dam, bypassing the Phillips Reservoir.
City officials say the project would provide system security in the event of an emergency, increase capacity for future growth, and support climate resilience.
“This is a critical piece of infrastructure,” said Mayor Wayne Price.
The Strategic Priorities Fund supports large-scale local government projects and can cover up to 100 per cent of eligible costs, to a maximum of $7 million.
The project is being developed in partnership with Urban Systems and Kiewit, and staff say they are confident it can be completed within the funding cap.
As required by the grant, council has committed to managing any cost overruns through the city’s Annual Capital Works Program.
Earlier this summer, council approved additional funding to support the design and planning phase of the project.
