The Cranbrook RCMP has launched Project 529 Garage, a bike registration and theft-prevention program aimed at reducing theft in the community.
The program allows cyclists to register their bikes through the 529 Garage app by entering details such as make, model, serial number and photos.
Users receive a tamper-resistant sticker, known as a 529 Shield, which links the bike to its online profile.
If a registered bike is stolen, the app can send alerts to local police, bike shops and app users.
Cranbrook RCMP has purchased a supply of 529 Shields and is offering them free to locals.
“This is about working together,” said Staff Sgt. Barry Graham, detachment commander.
“When police and the community join forces, we make it harder for thieves and safer for everyone. The launch of 529 Garage here is a big step forward in protecting what matters to people.”
Registration events will be held in the coming weeks, and cyclists can also register their bikes at the RCMP detachment on 11th Avenue South, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Province of British Columbia is supporting the rollout of Project 529 across the province.
Project 529, launched in 2013, is a community-based bike recovery program.
Cyclists can learn more and register at project529.com or by downloading the 529 Garage app.
