The Columbia Basin Trust is taking on a new role in addressing housing by directly developing multi-unit residential projects across the Southern Interior.
The Trust says the goal is to provide more affordable, energy-efficient homes for low- and moderate-income households, particularly in smaller and rural communities where rental options and development capacity may be limited.
Trust president and CEO Johnny Strilaeff says the focus will be on areas with the greatest need.
The Trust also noted that developing in some communities will come with significant challenges, but planning is underway aimed at resolving them.
The first project is underway in Nakusp, where design and costing are in progress for a six-unit rental building with amenity space at 915 Highway 23 North.
Once complete, developments will be transferred to local organizations to manage, intended to provide community ownership and stability.
The Trust says the initiative expands its work to support the economic, social and environmental well-being of the Columbia Basin.
