Cranbrook police have had a busier quarter compared to their first three months of this year, and property crime made up a significant bulk of their criminal files.
Between April and June, the local RCMP opened a total of 2,781 reports – up 519 from Q1. While most involved non-criminal matters, such as wellness checks and missing person reports, property crime accounted for the next 15 percent. Break-and-enters, as well as car and bike thefts, jumped from 53 to 119 between the two quarters.
Sgt. Graham Hartl, Operations Support NCO, says efforts to combat property crime remain a top priority.
“We’re using data-driven strategies and high-visibility patrols to reduce property crime,” said Hartl. “We continue to ask the public to secure valuables and lock up bikes and trailers to help prevent theft.”

Crimes against people made up another eight per cent, followed by other offences (5%), traffic incidents (3%) and fraud (2%).
RCMP added that the recent rollout of body-worn cameras may have improved transparency, but it also added to the administrative workload for officers and support staff.
