Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC is set to break ground on a new affordable housing project in Cranbrook, after a land donation from the city.
On Monday, council approved the transfer of city-owned land at 2600 4th Street South to Habitat for Humanity.
The non-profit plans to build a side-by-side duplex on the site, with each unit featuring three bedrooms, one-and-a-half bathrooms, and unfinished basements for future expansion.
The project aims to support working families with dependent children by offering affordable homes through no-down-payment, income-geared mortgages.
“This project builds on a successful partnership we had with Habitat back in 2014 in Slaterville,” said Mayor Wayne Price.
“With affordable housing continuing to be a key need in Cranbrook, we as a council are committed to addressing local housing challenges.”
Habitat recently notified the city that the location meets their needs following a review and investigation.
Further updates will be shared as the project progresses.
