The City of Fernie could be moving forward with a new EV charging station soon– if the province approves.
At a meeting on Tuesday (Jul. 8), Council unanimously approved an endorsement for an EV charging station at Skate Park. EVLution Charge Inc. has requested to apply for the CleanBC Go Electric Public Charger Program, which can cover up to half of the installation costs, with a maximum of $80,000 per station. However, to qualify for the grant, the City would first need to support it.
“We’ve now worked with legal counsel and the proponent to complete that work, and their grant application is in based on that letter of endorsement and confirmation that this report is coming forward to Council,” said Chief Administrative Officer Michael Boronowski.
All project costs will be covered by EVLution, with the City only being responsible for clearing snow around the four charging spots. Ten per cent of sales revenues from EV customers will be paid to the City as rent.
The Go Electric Public Charger Program is a B.C. government initiative meant to boost the number of public EV charging stations across the province.
If EVLution has not installed the chargers by July 2026, the City will move to end the agreement by default.
