A proposed community field house in Fernie has received a $1-million donation from Elk Valley Resources.
The funding was announced Monday by the company and the Elk Valley Field House Society, which is leading the effort to build a new indoor recreation and gathering space next to the Fernie Aquatic Centre.
The project was launched following the closure of the Fernie Community Centre in June 2024.
The society says the new facility will include gym space and flexible areas for sports, events and other community uses.
The $1-million contribution will support design, planning and initial development.
Key stakeholders say the donation demonstrates strong regional support and a commitment to creating long-term benefits.
The City of Fernie has also committed $525,000 to the project through the Resort Municipality Initiative and has agreed to a long-term lease of city-owned land.
Additional fundraising and planning are expected to continue through the next phase of the project.
