Cranbrook is stepping up efforts to maintain public spaces and neighbourhood standards with the adoption of two new bylaws by City Council.
The Public Places Bylaw No. 4207, 2025 and the Unsightly Premises Bylaw No. 4206, 2025 aim to support a safer, cleaner, and more respectful community for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
The Public Places Bylaw sets out behavioural expectations for public areas including streets, sidewalks, parks and city facilities.
It targets disruptive activities such as public intoxication, fighting, graffiti and littering, and gives both Bylaw Services and Cranbrook RCMP enhanced authority to respond more effectively.
The Unsightly Premises Bylaw allows the city to address neglected or nuisance properties, those with excessive garbage and overgrown yards.
The bylaw is intended to preserve neighbourhood safety and appearance, while also protecting property values and reducing cleanup costs that could otherwise fall to taxpayers.
“People want their neighbourhoods to feel safe and clean, and they want to be able to enjoy public spaces without running into disruptive behaviour, vandalism and garbage,” said Mayor Wayne Price.
“These new bylaws will really help our staff better respond to those concerns more quickly and effectively.”
The City’s next step will be establishing a fine structure for violations under the new bylaws.
Officials say the changes will give the city stronger tools to address problem areas across the community.
