A dog rescued from years of neglect in Mexico has been flown from Abbotsford to a new foster home in Cranbrook by volunteer pilots with Canadian Wings of Rescue.
Freya was found chained and starved before being rescued by Wet Noses Rescue.
After initial care and fostering in Abbotsford, she was ready for a new foster home with more space, which Cranbrook resident Doris Khvediouk agreed to provide.
Volunteer pilot Brad Reid, based in Kelowna, flew Freya on this mission.
Reid said he has been flying for 20 years and saw the opportunity to combine his passion for flying with helping animals.
“Wings of Rescue is starting to get momentum in Canada, and the timing just worked for me,” he said.
Coordination for the flight took place through a messaging group, where pilots respond to requests detailing pick-up and drop-off locations.
Reid described his experience: “This was my third flight with the organization. I flew out to Abbotsford, spent time making sure Freya was calm and comfortable, then flew her safely to Cranbrook.”
Reid said meeting Freya’s foster was a rewarding part of the process.
“Doris was really excited to meet Freya, and they quickly formed a strong bond. They stay in contact, sharing updates and photos.”
Foster mom Doris Khvediouk noted the importance of fostering animals during their transition.
“Freya now has all the room she needs to run, play, and enjoy the life she deserves,” she said.
Reid also reflected on the community of volunteer pilots involved.
“Many pilots fly as a hobby and love animals, so this combines both. Every flight is an opportunity to meet new cool people and help animals in need.”
