Fernie is going after gopher holes this week, especially in the cemetery and various city parks.
Fernie Cemetery will be closed between 6 a.m. and noon daily, until Saturday (June 7), while the Max Turyk soccer fields and ball diamonds will be temporarily closed at a later date.
“The City of Fernie will be working to reduce the negative impacts caused by gophers, including land and property damage, and walking hazards in public areas,” wrote the City of Fernie in a social media post. “[W]e appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work to maintain safe and accessible public spaces. Thank you for helping us keep Fernie safe and enjoyable for all.”
Officials added that all gopher operations are safe for the public, pets and the environment.
