Authorities are warning parents and guardians about a online network known as “The Com” that is targeting vulnerable children and youth across popular digital platforms to coerce them into acts of violence, animal abuse, and exploitation.
The loosely connected network of individuals and groups operates through widely accessible apps and games — including Discord, Telegram, Roblox, and Minecraft —
and has been linked to a growing number of online abuse cases involving youth aged 8 to 17.
Members of “The Com” use manipulation, grooming, threats, and coercion to desensitize and radicalize children, pressuring them into producing graphic or incriminating content.
In some cases, youth have been urged to harm pets, perform acts of self-mutilation, or produce explicit images of themselves or others.
“These predators often aim to gain notoriety within their online community by victimizing children,” say investigators, noting that such content is shared among group members as a form of “status.”
Warning signs include a child becoming withdrawn, covering injuries, harming pets, expressing interest in violent ideologies, or receiving anonymous gifts.
Children may also appear fearful of certain online contacts or begin engaging with encrypted messaging apps unfamiliar to their parents.
Police are urging parents to monitor online activity, maintain open communication with their children, and report any suspicious behaviour.
“Your report could prevent life-altering harm,” officials say.
If you believe a child is in immediate danger, call 9-1-1.
Suspicious online activity should be reported to local law enforcement.
