Mail and parcel delivery in Cranbrook and surrounding East Kootenay communities could come to a halt by the end of the week, as Canada Post workers prepare to go on strike.
The Crown corporation says it received official notice Monday from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, which represents more than 55,000 employees nationwide.
The union plans to begin job action at 12:01 a.m. Friday.
If the strike goes ahead, Canada Post says it will stop accepting new mail and parcels.
Items already in the system will be held securely, but won’t be delivered until the labour disruption ends.
A 32-day strike late last year created major backlogs during the holiday season, leaving millions of packages and letters delayed across the country.
There is no immediate word on how long this potential strike could last, or how it might affect rural and remote delivery in areas like the East Kootenay.
