A Revelstoke man has been convicted of mischief in connection with a 2022 vandalism incident at the Fernie Aquatic Centre that caused more than $30,000 in damage and forced the cancellation of a community swim meet.
Elk Valley RCMP responded to the facility on Oct. 29, 2022, after debris, including glass and rocks, was found in the pool.
Investigators later discovered two broken windows on the upper floor, which had caused the debris to fall onto the pool deck and into the water.
DNA evidence collected from the scene helped police identify a suspect, Aden Shatalow-Dominick, 22, who had sought treatment for injuries consistent with broken glass.
After a lengthy investigation and DNA confirmation, charges were approved in May 2024.
Shatalow-Dominick was found guilty in March 2025 and received a suspended sentence with 24 months’ probation.
He was also ordered to pay $22,837 in restitution to the City of Fernie.
Staff Sgt. Svend Nielsen of the Elk Valley RCMP thanked the public and partner agencies for their help in the investigation.
