Original story:
Environment Canada has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for areas to the east of our region.
As of 4 p.m., the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek were under the alert, expected to stay in place possibly until Wednesday.
More areas may be added later.
According to a statement released Sunday afternoon, wind chill values overnight are forecast to fall below minus 40.
It warns risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic diseases, those working or exercising outdoors, or not having proper shelter.
With such temperatures, frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin.
Those driving through the area are also urged to make sure they’re prepared for the elements, including having added clothing and blankets for the trip, and an emergency vehicle kit, in the event of a breakdown.
