The Regional District of East Kootenay decided yesterday to carry out a controlled burn on its waste wood pile at the Wasa Transfer Station after, what’s it’s describing, as an apparent arson.
It took place at around 8:00 Monday night when two separate fires broke out in the waste wood; a third then ignited by the first two.
Solid Waste Superintendent Jim Penson said, thankfully, the incident was contained to the wood pile and didn’t spread further on site.
An excavator and water truck were used to make sure it could be contained.
It’s the second time in as many weeks that a fire has broken out in the waste wood pile.
Garbage and recycling collection remains unaffected by any work being carried out.
