In an unprecedented move, the province’s opposition party, BC United, decided yesterday to end its election campaign, effective immediately.
Leader Kevin Falcon made the surprise move, now urging all BCU supporters to vote for the BC Conservative Party in the provincial election October 19th.
He’s also, although this could be challenged, has withdrawn all 57 of the party’s candidates nominated for the upcoming election, which would include current sitting MLA Tom Shypitka in the future riding of Kootenay-Rockies…
By all indications, Falcon made the call to suspend the BC United Party’s campaign without the support of his caucus.
Both he and Conservative leader John Rustad would not go into detail Wednesday into what will happen with the current slate of candidates.
Global BC’s Keith Baldry, in breaking the story yesterday, did say several candidates, including Tom Shypitka, expected to run under the Conservative banner.
The party, however, currently has a candidate Kootenay-Rockies, in Pete Davis.
With the BCU stepping away from the election, it also leaves Kimberley candidate Scott McInnis in limbo.
Likely, more to come from this, including whether the move might be challenged internally or possibly in court.
