Wednesday, as it turns out, is the 13th straight day of our extended heat wave with temperatures each day, since July 5, reaching above 30 degrees.
Today’s forecast high is no exception with predictions of 35 for Cranbrook and Kimberley and 32 for the Elk Valley.
Yesterday was another record-breaker, temperature-wise, for the valley at 32.4 degrees Celsius, beating the old mark established in 2004 of 32.1.
Cranbrook’s airport weather station peaked at 35.1.
That, too, was a new benchmark for July 16, beating the 2004 yardstick of 33.3.
The ongoing heat is adding to the risk of wildfires with 158 active fires province-wide, 16 of those in just the last 36 hours or so.
BC Wildfire Service reporting five wildfires here in the Southeast District, three being out-of-control, but all in the Kinbasket region north of Highway 1 between Revelstoke and Golden.
The Fire danger rating in our region is anywhere from HIGH to EXTREME.
The long-range forecast, for the next 14 days, from the Weather Network, not showing any relief with spikes well above 30 degrees and no significant rain in the forecast through the end of the month.
