If you live in the Elk Valley, you likely know about bears, and may have even had an encounter with one or more on your property.
A new initiative announced last week for farmers and ranchers in Jaffray, Fernie, Hosmer, Sparwood, and Elkford, is hoping to help deter human interaction.
The Elk Valley Coexistence Initiative is looking at making properties less appealing to bears – whether that removing fruit trees or installing electrical fencing around livestock or gardens.
The idea follows a study carried out by wildlife biologist Clayton Lamb with the group, Biodiversity Pathways…
The ‘cost share’ is a collaboration between Lamb’s group, the Province, Teck Coal, and the Yellowstone to Yukon Initiative.
