A new project proposed for the City of Kimberley’s Veterans Memorial Park could honour service dogs in the community.
Military Ames Facilitator Cindy Postnikoff made a proposal to city council, saying the group is looking to add a granite statue to the Memorial Park recognizing service animals.
“We’d like to incorporate a columbarium for service animals in the concrete base under the granite statue,” Postnikoff says. “This monument will garner positive global attention, another gem in Kimberley’s crown.”
Postnikoff believes the monument could be a first in the world, as a growing number of veterans have service dogs.
“The concrete base would house several spaces for ashes sealed in a container and the container fixed within by a plaque Military Ames would supply and sell, as per the memorial walls,” Postnikoff says.
No decision was made on the proposal at Monday night’s meeting of Kimberley council.
City council will discuss the idea at a later date.
