Management at Teck says they’re proud of the support they can provide to address wildfires near their operations in the Kootenay region.
Teck recently announced they were donating $230,000 to support emergency responses to blazes throughout BC, Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Washington State.
Teck’s Manager of Social Responsibility Rory O’Connor says a significant part of that donation was to help the ʔaq̓am community in their battle with the St Mary’s River wildfire.
“We provided a $25,000 donation to the Red Cross, specifically for response in the Cranbrook area,” O’Connor says. “Particularly ʔaq̓am was massively affected by the St. Mary’s fire, so we provided a $25,000 to ʔaq̓am as well for response on that fire.”
The local mining company has also been providing resources in efforts to suppress the Lladnar Creek wildfire near Sparwood and the Mount Bingay wildfire near Elkford.
O’Connor says they’ve been supporting local fire crews with heavy equipment and accommodations.
“Our mine rescue teams are also working collaboratively with all local emergency services and BC Wildfire Service to provide support wherever we could,” O’Connor says. “We’re really proud of the teams and the work together. Also just so grateful to the first responders who come from far and wide to help get this under control.”
The mining company works closely with municipal emergency responders to help suppress fires within Teck’s operating areas as needed.
