ʔaq̓am’s chief and council have released a Declaration of a State of Emergency following the investigation into the death of Anna Mae Morigeau in the community.
Council members say in the statement that the recent community tragedy is a direct result of gangs and those affiliated with gangs pushing drugs in their community, which has created the conditions for violence and death to occur.
ʔaq̓am’s Chief and Council say protecting elders, children and families within the community is their highest priority.
Through the Declaration of a State of Emergency, all persons within the ʔaq̓am community are being told to step up to their responsibilities toward one another and ensure safety of the community.
This includes stopping gossiping about the situation and reporting any illegal and suspicious incidents to the RCMP.
ʔaq̓am is also calling on the Canadian and BC governments to take all necessary steps to fulfill their responsibilities regarding the investigation and prosecution of crimes that have to do with gangs and drug trafficking within the ʔaq̓am community.
The declaration is also being sent to various federal and provincial departments that they want to work together with to achieve safety in the community.
