The Calgary Police Service has arrested and charged two men in what they call a multi-million dollar fraud case connected to Lake Koocanusa.
Police in Calgary report the two men were charged in relation to facilitating fraudulent sales of RV camping lots, cabin lots and dock spaces in BC to numerous residents of Calgary.
Its alleged that between 2014 and 2017, 61 year old Craig Douglas McMorran of Calgary sold RV park sites fraudulently as the owner and operator of Sweetwater Resort, a land development project on the shores of Lake Koocanusa.
An investigation launched by the Calgary Police Economic Crimes Unit discovered the sales contracts from the RV park site transactions were invalid and a result, Sweetwater RV Park was ordered to close by the Regional District of East Kootenay.
Police allege that McMorran fraudulently obtained more than $2 million from multiple victims who believed they were purchasing legitimate lot and dock spaces in BC. He was arrested without incident on September 16th for fraud over $5,000, money laundering and theft over $5,000.
A second suspect, 53 year old Gus Kalabalikis of Calgary, was arrested September 20th and also charged with one count of theft over $5,000 and three counts of fraud over $5,000.
Calgary police are thanking the Elk Valley RCMP for their help in advancing the investigation.
