The long wooden staircase leading away from Cranbrook’s Balment Park is being replaced.
Cranbrook City Council has approved a budget of over $330,000 to replace the covered stairs connecting Balment Park to 17th Avenue South with a metal slotted staircase.
Mayor Wayne Prices says the stairs are old and could pose a safety risk.
“We are definitely looking at probably some risks to the city if we don’t do something very soon,” says Price. “They’re at the end of their life. I’m grateful to our public works people that they’ve taken a look around in other areas and going to come up with a metal open stairway. It probably is the best solution.”
Price says the new stairs should be more weather resistant.
“That’s going to be the open grate type of thing, certainly in the winter time there’d be no build up or collection of snow or ice on there,” he says. “I’m sure our public works people will be monitoring it throughout the winter time. Any type of maintenance that needs to be under taken? They’ll be on top of that.”
The project’s tender process closes Thursday.
