WildSafeBC issues reminder on coyote denning season


WildSafeBC Kimberley-Cranbrook is reminding you to be alert for coyotes in the region.

Community coordinator Danica Lisk says coyote denning season is in full swing, and the animals have been spotted around Kimberley’s Townsite area.

“We might see an increase in conflicts especially with humans and domestic pets,” says Lisk. “It’s not just in Kimberley, it’s around the province that there’s been an increase in coyote reports.”

You’re reminded to keep small pets indoors and to keep your dogs on a leash if you’re out for a walk, you should also manage wildlife attractants on your property.

Lisk says coyotes are usually active during dawn and dusk, but daytime sightings are more likely during denning season.

Coyote denning season is in full swing and this can be a time where there are increased conflicts with humans and domestic pets. There has been a recent increase in coyote reports. Keep your pet safe in coyote country by keeping them on a leash. Small pets should be kept close. Coyotes are often most active during dawn and dusk, but may be seen during the day during denning season. Avoid walking pets in areas with lots of cover as this is where coyotes are likely to den.
Unlike wolves, coyotes are well adapted to living close to human settlements. Wolves are often much more wary of people but may become habituated or food conditioned. Coyotes, on the other hand, may not fear humans and may take up residence near human settlements if they receive food either directly or indirectly. During denning season, coyotes may be more bold around humans and pets as they try and protect their pups.
Coyotes are found throughout Mainland BC. While coyotes can be excellent mousers and rodent control, they can also be a threat to pets and young livestock.
