The City of Cranbrook is seeking funding to help the Regional District of the East Kootenay provide shelter and support during emergency incidents.
City Council has submitted an application through the RDEK to the Union of BC Municipalities Community Emergency Preparedness Fund.
Mayor Wayne Price says they are seeking up to $30,000 to purchase lodging supplies such as cots, bedding, tables and chairs, and storage units.
“They’re going to have a cash of supplies, administrative support supplies, cots and provisions like that in each region,” Price says. “Look at what’s been happening the last number of years, I think if we would have had something of a long duration where we couldn’t accommodate them in hotels or different areas like that, it’s going to be cots in the arena type thing.”
Price says Cranbrook and the RDEK combined their emergency response agencies to better support long duration events.
“Basically what happened was Cranbrook decided to join the RDEK’s emergency program,” he says. “Which, I think is an excellent model, and what we’ve seen in some of these other areas around the province over the years a real big problem is when it’s a ‘turf’ thing. Somebody has to let the turf go, get together, and do the right thing.”
The City and RDEK plan to have multiple units spread across the region if the funding is approved.
