Kimberley’s fire chief says recent funds for wildfire mitigation will help protect the Kimberley Nature Park area.
Kimberley is receiving $400,000 from the Forest Enhancement Society of BC to perform high density fuel treatment and create a landscape level fire break for the city.
Fire chief Rick Prasad says the work will be conducted in the Kimberley Nature Park in the summer.
“The work will be carried out in an area that traditionally hosts the Williamson Sap Sucker, that’s the nesting area,” Prasad says. “We’re expecting work to commence in August and runt though to November next year after the nesting season. We’re looking at hand falling small diameter trees and piling an burning surface fuel.”
Prasad says the work has to be timed for when the bird species has flown the coop.”
“Timing has never really worked out where we’ve had the project money in place to work in those areas while the birds are not there,” he says. “At this point in time it looks like everything is lining up for us to be able to get in there when the birds are not in the area and we can do the treatments and get that win ticked off.”
