A Fernie City Council candidate in next month’s election says addressing the community’s issues on housing availability and affordability will be at the top of her agenda if she’s elected.
City council candidate April Montague says more housing options are needed for low income families, and she hopes to foster more discussions on housing solutions and inclusiveness at City Hall.
“If you’re on low income housing, the next step would be to go out and find something else; a condo or a townhouse,” Montague says. “Right now, the gaps are so big between low income housing and maybe purchasing your own [home], there’s nothing in between. Fernie needs something like that.”
This is Montague’s first foray into municipal politics, wants to give the community a voice at City Hall and to be a part of the democratic process while advocating for affordable housing and infrastructure upgrades.
“I truly believe that we can gauge a healthy community by looking at how we treat our most vulnerable, how we support our people through different transitions in life,” says Montague. “Right now, Fernie’s community has large gaps. We are failing in some really important ways; housing, infrastructure and environment.”
Montague has mainly lived in Fernie for the last ten years, she’s passionate about creating a sustainable and inclusive future.
The municipal election is happening October 15.
