College of the Rockies Tourism Management instructor Becky Pelkonen and some of her Sustainable Tourism students started rethinking tourism by taking part in a Sustainability Field School in the principality of Andorra over the summer.
College of the Rockies is celebrating World Tourism Day with two days of festivities at the Cranbrook campus next week.
There will be a live stream of tourism events happening around the world for students to view on the September 27, then a keynote discussion open to the public is happening on the September 28.
Tourism Management program instructor Becky Pelkonen says the keynote speakers will be discussing this year’s World Tourism Day theme: “rethinking tourism”.
“We’re going to be bringing in Kristy Jahn-Smith of Cranbrook Tourism, as well as Janice Alpine from the Ktunaxa Nation Council,” says Pelkonen. “To ask this question of them: How can we think, or re-think tourism from a local perspective?”
She says they will be discussing the how “rethinking tourism” could impact the local tourism sector.
“We all know we are part of such a global industry and a global community as well,” she says. “But we really want to focus on how we can be part of the discussion and solution here within our home communities.”
The discussion is happening at the Cranbrook Campus Wednesday, it’s open to the public.
