BC’s new chief forester has some roots in the Columbia Valley.
Shane Berg has been named British Columbia’s 18th chief forester and assistant deputy minister for the Office of the Chief Forester.
Berg previously served as deputy chief forest for the past five years and began his career as a silviculture technician in Invermere.
He is a registered professional forester who has worked throughout the province, and has since worked in Grand Forks and Squamish and has served over 14 years with the BC Forest Service in northern BC and the Southern Interior.
His role as the chief forester will see him responsible under the Forest Act for determining the allowable annual cut for each of BC’s 71 time supply areas and tree farm licences.
Under the Range Practices Act, the chief forester also sets seed, seedling and stocking standards for the reforestation of BC’s forests.
