A partnership between the federal and B.C. governments is supporting the City of Fernie in building a $15.5 million fire hall in the community.
The City is receiving $7 million through the federal Strategic Priorities Fund administered by the Province of B.C., which supports infrastructure projects beyond the capacity of a single local government.
“Fernie’s new fire hall will provide Fernie Fire Rescue with the modern space and facilities needed to respond to emergencies and continue serving residents,” said B.C. Municipal Affairs Minister Christine Boyle.
“This project reflects the strong partnership between the Government of Canada, UBCM and the City of Fernie to deliver modern infrastructure that strengthens emergency response.”
The grant will support emergency response, firefighter health and safety and long-term operational flexibility during essential fire protection and other emergencies when needed.
“This funding is a significant investment in the safety and resilience of our community. A new fire hall has been a long-standing priority for Council and will provide our fire fighters with the modern space they need to train, respond, and serve our community effectively for years to come,” said Fernie Mayor Nic Milligan.
Construction on the modernized, purpose-built fire hall is underway in early August. Fire crews are expected to move in by fall 2027.
