The City of Fernie is gearing up for growth with the latest provincial and federal investment in the community.
Today (Mar. 12), BC Housing, the Ministry of Child Care and the federal government have announced a combined total of over $30 million to build 27 one-, two- and three-bedroom rental homes and an on-site childcare facility in Fernie.
“By working closely with our partners, we are advancing a solution that delivers both the childcare spaces and affordable homes our community urgently needs, and it’s exciting to see construction set to get underway,” said Fernie Mayor Nic Milligan.
The childcare facility is set to house up to 98 children funded through the ChildCareBC New Spaces Fund.
“Childcare is not a luxury, it is a necessity for thriving families and communities. For years, families in Fernie have been waiting for more childcare spaces, and we are incredibly proud to see this project moving into the construction phase,” said Elk Valley Childcare Society president Leonie Galarneau.
Fernie contributed the $500,000 land needed for the project.
The project will be located at 302 Pine Avenue, next to the Fernie Dirtjump Park, and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2028.
