On Monday, a passing driver in Cranbrook alerted authorities after realizing family keepsakes in their vehicle could be potentially explosive.
The driver contacted Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services, whose crews secured the material in a safe location.
When it became clear that the item could be explosive, the fire department reportedly contacted the RCMP.
Officers then isolated the scene to protect the public and contacted the specialized Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) to dispose of the material.
The EDU operates across British Columbia and is external to the local RCMP detachment.
“This was one of those unique situations that called for specialized resources beyond what we have here locally,” said Chief Scott Driver of Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services.
“We’re very fortunate to have such strong partnerships with the local RCMP detachment, and that they have access to this Explosives Unit. Their expertise and teamwork ensured everything was handled safely and professionally.”
Authorities are reminding the public that if they encounter anything unsafe or potentially explosive, they should leave it in place and call the proper authorities.
