The City of Cranbrook is set to begin seasonal closures of parks and sports fields on Monday (Oct. 6) as crews start preparing for the winter months.
Following the end of the fall baseball season on Monday, all ball diamond gates will be locked.
The city says the closures are intended to protect both wildlife and infrastructure.
Elk and deer have been known to wander into fenced areas and may become trapped, potentially injuring themselves or damaging fences and turf.
Crews have already completed aeration and fertilizing and are working to complete the irrigation shutdown.
The city says these steps help maintain the health of the fields through the winter and into spring.
Beginning the week of October 20, all city sports fields are set to be closed to public use for the remainder of the season.
At that time, most public washrooms will also close, except the following parks, which will remain open year-round:
-
Rotary Park washrooms
-
Outhouses at Idlewild Park
-
Outhouses next to Elizabeth Lake Lodge
The main gate at Moir Park will also be closed for the winter and is expected to reopen in the spring.
The city is thanking residents and park users for their cooperation.
