The City of Cranbrook is urging residents to cut back on water use starting this weekend.
On Saturday, October 4, the city will transition to Stage 3 watering restrictions, requiring users to reduce outdoor water use to one day per week.
“Based on the data we’re collecting, we’re seeing about 1,000 imperial gallons of water per minute (IGPM) being used for watering lawns this late in the year. We are effectively draining our drinking water reservoir to irrigate dormant grass and shrubs,” said Jason Perrault, Deputy Director of Public Works.
Between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. or 8 p.m. and 10 p.m., even-numbered addresses can water on Thursday, while odd-numbered addresses can water on Tuesday. Watering will not be allowed on any other day of the week.
“Our crews are actively blowing out all of the City’s irrigation systems. It is a great time for residents who have in-ground irrigation systems to also do the same”.

Residents can water their lawn, trees and shrubs using a hose with a shut-off nozzle or an in-ground irrigation system. Vegetable gardens and edible plants can also be watered using a hose with a hand-held nozzle, but manual sprinklers are no longer allowed.
“We will continue to closely monitor the situation and will share any changes or new information with you as we move through the coming weeks,” wrote the City.
Restrictions will remain until further notice. More information on water use is available through the City’s website.
