This year’s National Fire Prevention Week campaign is focusing on the safe use of lithium-ion batteries in homes.
The campaign, which runs from Oct. 5 to 11, is named “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”
It highlights the importance of using, charging, and disposing of lithium-ion batteries properly to reduce the risk of fire.
Elk Valley Fire Service Chief Michael Hockley says the batteries are found in many household devices, including phones, laptops, power tools, and e-bikes.
If damaged or misused, they can overheat, catch fire, or explode.
Fire services are urging people to buy only certified battery-powered products, use the original charging equipment, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
They are also reminding residents not to throw used batteries in the garbage or household recycling, but to take them to designated drop-off locations.
