The Community Foundation of the Kootenay Rockies has launched a new endowment fund aimed at supporting hospice care in the Elk Valley.
The Elk Valley and Area Hospice Legacy Fund will reportedly provide yearly grants to the Elk Valley & Area Hospice Society, supporting their mission of offering end-of-life and bereavement services in Elkford, Sparwood, Fernie, and nearby communities.
Jade Elford, coordinator of the hospice society, says the fund represents an important step forward.
“This is another positive step towards building our financial sustainability. The annual, unrestricted grant from this endowment will help us to continue to provide compassionate end-of-life and bereavement services in our communities.”
The hospice society began in the early 2000s as a local initiative led by a group of local women.
Today, about 30 trained volunteers aim to provide emotional support and companionship to 15 to 20 families each year.
Lynnette Wray, executive director of CFKR, says the new fund ensures that this work continues for generations.
“The Elk Valley & Area Hospice Society and their team of trained volunteers provide such an important service in Elkford, Sparwood, Fernie, and the surrounding area. CFKR is honoured to support this vital service through this new endowment fund.”
CFKR will invest donations permanently and distribute only the annual income as a grant.
The principal amount will reportedly stay intact, allowing the fund to provide ongoing support.
